The year started off with a great surprise visit from my sister, Katie (or Kathryn or Kate - first name change is up for debate). She is the first of our Pasquini clan to make her way down to the Lone Star state to visit me. Katie said that she's starting the trend for 2012, and I should be assured that others from home are making plans.

We toured Cowtown & the the Big D to show her why people shouldn't mess with Texas and why the motto here is go big or go home! Giddy up.

After a week spent on St. Lucia, I really think that we could live this mantra longer: No Pressure, No Problem. What a gorgeous island and lovely people. Why do we have to return? What a lovely, belated honeymoon treat! This was a well deserved and much overdue trip for us... perfect finish to 2011.

Apparently I have dropped my personal blogging ball. I know I've been blogging - but it's only been for TechKNOW tools, BreakDrink & the NACADA blog. My bad. I will improve on this, my friends.

When asked to do a keynote for the University of Hawaii System Advisor workshop... what is one to do? I said yes. So here I am enjoying Honolulu and the action in Waikiki for the week. The advising group at UH are more than lovely and I had an amazing time with them yesterday for their "tech" theme conference. I will post more about that on TeckKNOW Tools. Here I will share with you my fun adventures I have over the week & weekend before I join the AACE E-Learn Conference on Tuesday.

16 Life Rules

Psychology | June 27th, 2011

1. Get and stay out of your comfort zone.

I believe that not much happens of any significance when we’re in our comfort zone. I hear people say, “But I’m concerned about security.” My response to that is simple: “Security is for cadavers.”

2. Never give up.

Almost nothing works the first time it’s attempted. Just because what you’re doing does not seem to be working, doesn’t mean it won’t work. It just means that it might not work the way you’re doing it. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it, and you wouldn’t have an opportunity.

3. When you’re ready to quit, you’re closer than you think.

There’s an old Chinese saying that I just love, and I believe it is so true. It goes like this: “The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed.”

4. With regard to whatever worries you, not only accept the worst thing that could happen, but make it a point to quantify what the worst thing could be.

Very seldom will the worst consequence be anywhere near as bad as a cloud of “undefined consequences.” My father would tell me early on, when I was struggling and losing my shirt trying to get Parsons Technology going, “Well, Robert, if it doesn’t work, they can’t eat you.”

5. Focus on what you want to have happen.

Remember that old saying, “As you think, so shall you be.”

6. Take things a day at a time.

No matter how difficult your situation is, you can get through it if you don’t look too far into the future, and focus on the present moment. You can get through anything one day at a time.

7. Always be moving forward.

Never stop investing. Never stop improving. Never stop doing something new. The moment you stop improving your organization, it starts to die. Make it your goal to be better each and every day, in some small way. Remember the Japanese concept of Kaizen. Small daily improvements eventually result in huge advantages.

8. Be quick to decide.

Remember what General George S. Patton said: “A good plan violently executed today is far and away better than a perfect plan tomorrow.”

9. Measure everything of significance.

I swear this is true. Anything that is measured and watched, improves.

10. Anything that is not managed will deteriorate.

If you want to uncover problems you don’t know about, take a few moments and look closely at the areas you haven’t examined for a while. I guarantee you problems will be there.

11. Pay attention to your competitors, but pay more attention to what you’re doing.

When you look at your competitors, remember that everything looks perfect at a distance. Even the planet Earth, if you get far enough into space, looks like a peaceful place.

12. Never let anybody push you around.

In our society, with our laws and even playing field, you have just as much right to what you’re doing as anyone else, provided that what you’re doing is legal.

13. Never expect life to be fair.

Life isn’t fair. You make your own breaks. You’ll be doing good if the only meaning fair has to you, is something that you pay when you get on a bus (i.e., fare).

14. Solve your own problems.

You’ll find that by coming up with your own solutions, you’ll develop a competitive edge. Masura Ibuka, the co-founder of SONY, said it best: “You never succeed in technology, business, or anything by following the others.” There’s also an old Asian saying that I remind myself of frequently. It goes like this: “A wise man keeps his own counsel.”

15. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

Lighten up. Often, at least half of what we accomplish is due to luck. None of us are in control as much as we like to think we are.

16. There’s always a reason to smile.

Find it. After all, you’re really lucky just to be alive. Life is short. More and more, I agree with my little brother. He always reminds me: “We’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time!

After being to swim practice at 5 am (and sometimes 5 pm) as a kid, I have often looked beyond the pool deck for my workouts. Now that the EXTREME heat of Texas is upon us, I'm thinking that I might need to revisit some of my former lap workouts. Time to bust out the swim cap & goggles as this former fish is heading to the waters tonight. I think I'll ease into the swim workout drills one of these beginners sets since it's been a while:

Workout #1
Warm up with a 50 meter swim.
Ladder set: Swim 50, 75, 100, 100, 75, and 50 meter sets.
Cool down: 75 meters, 50 meters and 25 meters swim

Workout #2
Warm up: 25 meters, 50 meters & 75 meters
For the main workout swim: 2 X 25 meters freestyle & 2 X 25 meters kick
Ladder of 25-50-75-100-75-50-25.
Cool down: 75 meters, 50 meters and 25 meters swim.

Workout #3
Warm up by swimming a 300 meter warm up set. (change swimming styles every 50 meters)
Next, swim ten sets of 50 meters freestyle, with a ten second rest between each set.
Follow these sets with another ten sets of 50 meters, this time with a kick board and rest for around 12 seconds for each set.
Finish the workout with 200 meter freestyle.

Workout #4
Warm up: 300 meter swim with 100 meters freestyle, 100 meters kick and 100 meters backstroke.
Swim two sets of 500 meters.
Finish up with a 200 meter swim.

Workout #5
Warm up, swim 500 meters freestyle.
Swim 5 X 100 meters with a 20 second rest.
Swim a 5 X 75 meter swim with 15 seconds rest.
Do a 5 X 50 with ten seconds rest.
Swim a 5 X 25 with five seconds rest
Cool Down: backstroke of 5 X 50.

Usually I am the first one out the door & on a plane during a long weekend. This year we opted for a local getaway to downtown Dallas - here's the view from our hotel room.

Although Fiachra & I did not venture far, I will say we had fun exploring some new places to eat, drink & be merry. A few new finds in Dallas include:

Cretia's on McKinney - relaxing patio and atmosphere
Cork Wine Bar - sample a wide array of vino
Malai Kitchen - fantastic menu & delicious food...we shall return
Si Tapas - watched Barcelona crush Manchester United
Kenichi - sampled some sake with the tasting menu
Idle Rich Pub - entertaining crowd on the weekend; authentic pub
Anvil Pub (2nd visit) - great veggie menu & tasty BEvERages

Sometimes a new perspective is all you need to be refreshed.

It's been a week since the surgery. Fiachra is a very good patient and healing well.

Today was the post-operation appointment with the surgeon, Dr. Roehrborn, to review the operation and pathology report. We are glad to report that Fiachra's pathology is negative for any traces of cancer. Hoo-ray!

Thanks for all the love, well wishes, and support throughout this process. Fiachra is still on the mend, and will reach his 100% over the course of the next few weeks.

Dressed & Ready for Battle

In January Fiachra went for his final tests to determine where and how much cancer they could detect in his prostate with a saturation biopsy. This was his first surgery since age 12.

Tomorrow, May 12th, he will have to gear up for another battle as he heads in for Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy at UT Southwestern. Although this procedure sounds scary, it will be one of the first steps to rid himself of cancer.

For those of you who know and care about this guy as much as I do, please send your love (text, email or call) to him as he could use the support now and on his road to recovery. We thank all of you who have loved and supported us so far.

I'm ashamed to admit that our university will be going on day 3 of closures to my friends to the north. At home in Canada, a "snow day" would legitimately be a blizzard, 8 feet or more of snow, ice & power failures, and/or a combination of any listed.

Sadly, Texas is not equipped for this sort of freeze. Electricity is working overtime to keep things heated, and roads are difficult to clear without salt/sand trucks. I have heard of one or two trucks being used, however that's primarily to ensure the Steelers and Packers team buses make it to the Cowboy Stadium for Superbowl practice. I know where our priorities are in the DFW area.

For now, I will take full advantage of this break to catch up on school reading, complete assignments, work on my lit review, prepare for a consulting gig, and, of course, blog.

We had a great visit with Angelica & Noel in CA over the Thanksgiving weekend. We toured their home area of Oakland, San Francisco (Piers, Alcatraz and the Mission) and stopped by Sonoma wine country. Overall, it was a great weekend had by all and we were quite thankful for the escape.

Although I like this 4-day American tradition for Thanksgiving, I think it's sort of a tease as we have a longer countdown for the winter break. Only 11 more sleeps until the holidays kick off....but it's not like anyone is counting.

'Tis that time of year ... says the holiday music playing before American Thanksgiving has even started.

I'm not a huge present giver/spender - but I have gotten into the habit of creating a few homemade gifts. The latest and greatest would be the annual holiday comic to recap the year for holiday cards.

This year I am tired. And I'm also not sure if all of the events will fit in a small 4x6 comic strip... BUT I am to give thanks for gifts, love & support - so it must be done.

I'm also working on some photo albums (real ones, believe it or not) for both sets of parents. I usually use Apple for this, but I'm open to suggestions.

Although it will be a bit of work to fit it in with my final projects and holiday travels, it will be fun to reflect back on the year and match up the memories in a fun way to share. Time flies when you don't pause for a bit to remember the moments.

That's how I have felt about this entire semester. Fall is a busy one.

For both an academic advisor and full time PhD student - this has been a serious bout these past few months. I suppose 12 hrs (4 classes), 2 chapter publications and a national conference wasn't a bright idea either. This is what happens when ambition takes over my reality.

I think I just have to make it to December 6th, and then all should be smooth sailing in 2010. I plan to work on some life balance in November. Go #TeamWellness.

Since we live in the Lone Star state of Texas and the Irish inlaws were in town, Fiachra & I ventured out to Wildcatter Ranch for a little wild west experience. This was more of a luxury place than rather a dude ranch, but I was able to ride a horse (maybe for the first time officially). It was very fun, and the riding the trail was quite relaxing.

Mine is here. This is the private beach I used to spend my summers on in P.E.I. It's just down the red dirt road from the family cottage, and only a 10 minute bike ride away. This is the place I often think about when life is stressful and all consuming. Wouldn't it be nice to just flash there now?

I'm taking some time this weekend to re-group from an action-packed conference and 2 week visit from the Irish in-laws. Time to catch up on some reading, research and school work - and, most importantly, spending some quality time with Fiachra.

Let's just say "we're going to the beach." Time to relax.

Sometimes it's important to plan ahead, and "put your ducks in a row."

Sometimes you can't plan for things, but instead you do your best with the hand that is dealt.

Enough with the cliches. Back to reality. Fiachra & I were given some news about his health 2 weeks ago. He has been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. This was shocking news since he is a healthy & fit 35 year old, with an unfortunate history of this disease in his family.

It was hard news to hear just shy of 6 weeks of marriage, but together we can get through this adverse situation. We are told this type of cancer is low grade & localized, so it is treatable since it was detected early. Now onto figuring out the next steps in this process.

Over the next few weeks we will be researching, meeting with specialist, asking questions, talking to loved ones, shedding a few tears, learning more about this cancer, and organizing those ducks. For those loved ones in our life, just send your support, sarcasm & sass to show your love.

The Story of Our Big Day

Just shy of two months, I have finally been able to get around to posting the wedding album. The professional photographer sent over 1100 pictures via our DVD album. We did not request a "traditional" album as I am more incline to post photogs online and I prefer to be part of the creative process for an album compilation before it goes to print.

For those of you following my personal blog, here's a sneak peak of the photos found in the Flickr Collection "The Story of Our Big Day." The Beginning, Middle & End albums provide a fairly great insight into the happenings on that day - and I managed to cut down the number of photos to approximately 425 images. I still have a few title and album edits to go.

We're still compiling pictures from the week, and waiting on our wedding day video to arrive - but reviewing the images brings back fond memories. What a fantastic time. Thanks for those who were there, and hopefully those who missed the day will enjoy.

Back in action is good ole College Football. This seems to be a staple in American culture, so Fiachra & I ventured up to the University of North Texas to see how the Mean Green kids roll.

Although a smaller crowd than we've seen at Michigan & NFL games, there was a spirited group of UNT fans showing their green pride and enjoying the tailgating fun. I was quite impressed with the turnout, and we had a decent group of friends from The Office (not the TV show).

Who knew that adult beverages and grilling under tents could be so much fun? Oh wait - I'm Canadian. It's like a camp out on asphalt, without the sleeping. #GoMeanGreen!

For as long as I have known Kristin Roe, she has exuded the mantra to "Just Keep Swimming" long before Nemo needed to be found. Kristin is an amazing women who has dedicated her work and studies to helping women & children infected/affected by HIV & AIDS. She is also an avid promoter for of local, sustainable support for a variety of communities in Africa.

Her passion for social justice has motivated her to swim great distances to help raise awareness and funds for various campaigns. Kristin is not only a great friend, but a true inspiration for me. Although I am not able to swim by her side in the English Channel, I know that Channeling Hope will inspire and encourage others to get involved and she will hear her supporters’ messages as she kicks and pulls through the open water.

Easter weekend was spent on a fun little road trip down south to the Texas Hill Country. Fiachra & I drove through Dublin, TX & enjoyed some original recipe Dr. Pepper.

We stayed in a German-settled little town called Fredericksburg (not VA). This place sort of reminded me of the shops, restaurants and more that are found at NOTL. Lots of great German food & brewed BEvERages were enjoyed.

Finally we toured our favourite Texan winery, Becker Vineyards and learned about how this place grows their grapes & lavendar. And to end the weekend, Fiachra & I climbed The Enchanted Rock - which was more hard work than enchanting... until we got to the top.

It's good to get a move on things & finally see things come along. We're excited to get things rolling for this shindig in July.

PLUS - we had a fun weekend in Ontario with friends & family. And of course, we enjoyed the end of the Olympics & Team Canada's triumph over Team USA. :)

It's been great watching the Winter 2010 Olympic games in Vancouver, even if Team Canada was defeated by Team USA in men's hockey last night.

The spirit of sport and all things Canadiana is still quite alive. It's great to get a glimpse of the action from TX, even if NBC Olympic coverage is not as stellar as the broadcasters from the north (I miss real-time, live coverage).

Believe it or not, the DFW area had it's first official "snow day." With record breaking 9.4 inches of snow.

As a Canuck, this is is a typical winter day... however Texans are not able to deal with this much snow all at once. I didn't mind sitting by the fire with a book & enjoying the snow fall - or the free day off work. :)

Canada vs. Ireland is a continuous battle in our household.

Team Canada has taken a beating on TV, from 30 Rock's recent slagging "aboooot" a new actor on the Tracey Jordan Show & Stephen's Colbert's anti Canadian Ice-Hole campaign - this has been raging over the last few weeks on The Colbert Report,

Sadly, Team Ireland has been beat down further today as they lost to France in the FIFA world cup qualifier playoff, due to a poor official (or lack there of) call. The BBC live feed today said "the Republic of Ireland was robbed," due to the handball & goal which lead France to a hollow victory. Sorry about that, lads.

IRE vs. CDN challenge continues this weekend as the local, sporting heros head to Dublin & Scotland for more games. Oh... it's on.

A couple of weekends ago, Fiach & I went up to Vancouver for a friend's wedding (of course) - Jen & Cassian. This is a great shot of Johnny & Fiachra taking a break from the afters on the harbour front having a bit of a laugh.

Although I have known Johnny through pictures, Skype and meeting his dad on the 12 Pubs of Christmas, this was my first time meeting him in the flesh. It was like I knew him most of my life. It was great spending time with him, Sarah (his wife) and Maeve. The ceremony and reception was top notch, and they couple even cut a Twitter Style cake.

And, of course, it was great to be back in Canada. Whether it's the double double of a Tim Horton's coffee or the friendly chit-chat, it's always good to visit the homeland. I definitely want to return to Van-City for a proper visit sans scheduled events - 2 days are clearly not enough.

Health SCARE Debate.

The topic of health care has been brought to the forefront of American politics thanks the the Obama administration. I think it's about time to talk about it. The question of who's health care system is "better" is often a hot debate among my US & Canadian friends.

Personally, I have had no issues with the Canadian health care system and I have had experienced excellent health care provision when I was living (and visiting) Toronto. Most of my appointments and specialist referrals were in a timely manner & quite effective. I think that the Canadian health care system takes a more proactive approach to helping their patients - most of which is completely covered for by OHIP insurance and there are minimal fees. The other perk to having a more centralized/provincial system is that fees for services and procedures are more standardized and regulated. Many visits/procedures can often be more affordable to pay out of pocket than paying into private HMO in the US. The focus are patients and not profits.

Comparatively, I have lived/worked in a few states in the US, France, and the UK - which all have different service providers and philosophies about their approach to health care. I think that each have both pros and cons, and a incremental approach is definitely needed to attack the current medical debate in the US.

Are Americans really getting what they pay for with their current health care system? Medical specialists, not special interests. People, not profits.

Last weekend Marre came down to visit Dallas from Chicago. We did a lot of touring around and hanging out in the DFW area.

On Sunday, Marre convinced us to go on a Segway Tour to check out downtown Dallas. Although we may look funny, the Segway was really fun to glide around, and it was also not a bad sightseeing tour. Now we can recommend this adventure to our future visitors when they come to the Big D instead of hiking around in the hot, hot heat.

The Elm Fork was an experience in itself. Little did I know, they make a golf course for shot guns. Who knew? Also, boys with guns = boys with toys. Scary.

It was great to have the boys over for a Texas style BBQ. Lots of chillin' & grillin' after a day in the HOT HOT heat firing guns. Mmmm mmm. Best of luck with the rest of your summer touring across America.

Jungle Red Salon?: A Salon in Name, But They Can't Really Cut It (Literally)

I often praise & rarely rant, but in the case of my recent trip to "Jungle Red Salon" I will do so right now:

Since I just moved to the DFW area, I was looking forward to finding a new salon & stylist locally.I was excited to receive a gift package of four visits from Fiachra, however I was very misled about the quality of customer service and provision of treatments from Jungle Red Salon. [There is no website, so this should have been my first hint at the future experience.]

Upon arriving early for my appointment I was greeted and provided services by the owner himself, Frank Roijas. One might think that the reception and style would be stellar, however this was anything but the case.

After a 40 minute wait in the lobby area, without an offer of a beverage as included in the package, I proceeded to the styling chair. Although the hair wash was alright, I was sorely disappointed by the technical ability and artistic vision that lacked from this 'well seasoned' stylist, Frank Roijas. Frank was not able to express his vision or engage his cliental in the styling process. He was unclear of his direction and end result for the cut. There was very little dialogue about the process and Mr. Roijas failed to gain any insight or feedback from me throughout the process.

During the actual appointment, Mr. Roijas left me sitting for a few long periods of time to take a phone call, chat with a staff member (2x) and attend to other matters in the salon. Many of these concerns would have been minimal had the end product not look unfinished and rushed. It was clear that the end of the day appointment schedule was not suitable with Mr. Roijas personal schedule as he was more interested in leaving the establishment promptly for his own cocktail hour elsewhere.

I would not feel compelled to right this review solely on the lack of customer service, however I was very shocked at the poor style and cut. The hair cut was left unbalanced and uneven, and actually boarded on looking like an 80's hair band/mullet style. When inquiring about the style and indicating a lack of satisfaction in the 'final' cut, Mr. Roijas became very defensive and overly critical towards me. I was embarrassed by his lack of professionalism and maturity. He proceeded to make negative, insulting comments to attack my original hair style (Purpose of a salon visit = To GAIN a hair style.), and insinuating that I apologize to him for not appreciating the unfinished end product.

Overall, I was very taken aback and offended by the experience. It is unfortunate that my partner was sold a 4 visit pass to Jungle Red Salon by the Advantage Trend Marketing group(1.800.480.9194). I feel bad for the waste of money and time spent on that gift, and would strongly recommend against others being lured into purchasing this "deal" package.

I would not recommend the Jungle Red Salon at all. I am told that this salon has been open for at least 4 months in Frisco, TX, however Mr. Roijas claims to have other salons 'in and around the area' for many years. Frank Roijas was not receptive to any constructive feedback, and failed to comprehend the issue at hand - listening and respecting his clientele. Word of mouth & viral marketing is still the best form of promotion and advertising for any business. Customer service should not be so overlooked and under-valued, Mr. Roijas.

Here is a picture of a colleague's dog - Ace - is all snazzy for St. Patrick's Day. This photograph made me (and I'm sure others) laugh out loud. If this does not amuse you, then be sure to see more hilarious & outrageous photos of Ace complete with costumes. This project resulted in a calendar publication x2.

Fortunately, a little child came along and now Ace is no longer is the focus of attention and costume changes. Lucky little guy.

There were two circuses visiting Barrie, ON last weekend, the REALLY BIG SHOW was The Schulze Wedding! The fabulous union of these 2 crazy kids was so much fun.

After the beautiful outdoor ceremony, Fiach & I had a great time MC'ing at the reception. Of course, the dance floor was HAWT and many laughs were had throughout the evening. Highlights of the weekend included, in no particular order:

Schulze warm & delicious hospitality
Kristen dancing down the isle (Happiest Bride EVER!)
Janice's revealing speech with PROPS
Return of The Lord of the Dance (It had been a while..)
Tippin Sibling Dance Off
Best Men Speech & KT correcting the "age issue"

Reunion with friends (even those on the outer edges)
3 am bus ride to the hotel with the Bride & Groom

Have a wonderful time at the cottage & NYC - you both deserve the holidays and rest after this memorable event.
